" Spreel " by Paul Marriner

(The Canadian Fly Fisher)

" Ever turn the air blue when that new fly line spool comes apart while winding it onto your reel ? Need I mention the tangled mess which ensues ?

Now say goodby to such irritations, at least for somes lines. The Spreel (contraction of "speed reel") from France (BéGéPeL) is one of those, "why didn't i think of that" products.

Slip in a spool, clip it to your rod and reel away contentedly. Enough pressure to prevent over-spooling while simultaneously eliminating line twist. One snag is that the Spreel only accepts spools smaller than 111 mm.

Okay are all the round flyline spools of which i'm aware as well as several hexagonal spools, but equally, the hexagonal spools of some well-know line types are too large for the device. Regardless, the Spreel will also work well for spooling on shooting line, backing, or ...well you might say the name of that other reel type, but i couldn't possibly mention it. Regardless, keep your eyes open for this simple and inexpensive product, as if it accepts the spool you just bought, you'll be happy to have it. "
